Who is Zyon? The character behind Cat Zyon

Zyon is a fictional character created by Brazilian artist Ramiro Silos. He was never a real, rescued or adopted cat. That distinction matters: the project uses imagination to invite real conversations about public space, coexistence and responsible care for animals.

A character built for recognition

The large eyes, rounded silhouette and vivid colours make Zyon readable from a distance and approachable up close. These choices allow the same character to live in a drawing, a painting, an educational activity or a three-metre sculpture without losing his identity.

A cat was chosen because cats can express independence and affection at once. Zyon does not speak for every animal or replace the work of specialists. He is a visual bridge: a familiar presence that helps different generations enter a conversation.

From image to public presence

When Zyon reaches a square, gallery or school, the setting changes the encounter. People can walk around the sculpture, photograph it and ask why it is there. That curiosity opens space for the project's three connected fronts: art in shared places, education that encourages empathy, and partnerships that can support animal-protection organisations.

The social purpose is not a fictional biography added to the character. It comes from how the project is organised and from the local relationships built around each activation. Read more about the Cat Zyon project and its public commitments.

What Zyon represents

Zyon represents attentive curiosity. He invites people to look again at a place they thought they knew and to consider how cities treat culture, animals and one another. The project avoids turning animal suffering into spectacle. Colour and accessibility create the invitation; verified information and responsible partners give it substance.

That is why Zyon can travel without becoming a generic mascot. Every destination requires context, permission and local collaboration. The character remains consistent, while each city helps define the public programme around him. See the confirmed and proposed stops on the exhibitions page.

Zyon begins as art, but his purpose is relational: to create encounters that can lead to learning and practical participation. If your institution, city or organisation wants to build one of those encounters, use the project contact form.
